  1. High School Diploma
  2. Currently enrolled college student with a minimum of 2.5 GPA
  3. Strong Math, Science, and/or English background, evidenced by high school or college transcript
  4. A desire to work with current middle/high school students

Reports to: AVID Coordinator (at each individual school)

Position Goals:

Tutors are key to the success of the AVID program. Tutors from area colleges and universities are trained to use specific teaching methodologies and materials to work with AVID students. Tutors work with AVID students in study groups and individually, assisting them in all academic areas to make progress commensurate with college expectations. AVID tutorials take place in small groups that are subject area specific. AVID tutors assist students in achieving their full potential by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Work with small groups of middle school and/or high school students
  2. Determine from student notes and discussions, the concepts that need to be explored or reviewed
  3. Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students
  4. Conduct tutorial sessions in all areas of mathematics, therefore, a strong math background is mandatory
  5. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow
  6. Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing
  7. Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern

Application and Training:

  1. Tutors will be trained in the Socratic tutorial method and will receive ongoing feedback and assistance with implementing AVID resources.

Job Specifics:

  • $10.74 per hour

Part Time: Tuesday & Thursday Work schedule; not to exceed 20 hours per week; times vary by work location
